As most trenches were too far apart for throwing hand grenades, the first grenade launchers were developed for increasing a grenade’s range.

Mortars
Infantry-portable mortars were developed as the primary means for infantry to clear out enemy trenches or soften them up for an assault. The high angle of attack worked perfectly for getting shells down inside the trench.

Cannons were normally restricted to crew-served weapons, but a small number of infantry-portable cannons were developed.
