Pages of the Peak

Created by Red Leader
Current Version: 0.1.1

A Slenderman-inspired horror gameplay mod for PEAK.

Search each biome for cursed pages, build stamina regeneration, survive Watching encounters, and escape Slenderman as every page makes the climb more dangerous.

โš ๏ธ Early Release / Beta

Pages of the Peak is still under active development.

The mod is playable in both solo and multiplayer, but this is still an early release and some systems are continuing to be tuned.

Possible issues may include:

  • unusual Slenderman AI behavior
  • pages spawning in imperfect locations
  • multiplayer synchronization edge cases
  • animation or visual issues
  • performance differences between systems
  • compatibility issues with other PEAK mods
  • balance changes between updates

Please expect updates as testing continues.

๐ŸŒ‘ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Pitch Black PEAK

โญ STRONGLY RECOMMENDED COMPANION MOD โญ

For the intended horror experience, Red Leader strongly recommends using Pages of the Peak together with:

Pitch Black PEAK by tony4twenty

Pitch Black PEAK transforms PEAK's lighting and atmosphere with features such as:

  • FullDark gameplay
  • an optional Day/Night Cycle
  • lantern-focused navigation
  • improved darkness and environmental lighting
  • multiplayer-synchronized darkness settings
  • additional nighttime atmosphere

Pages of the Peak includes special Slenderman lighting behavior designed with dark environments in mind.

When the blackout treatment is active, Slenderman can become extremely difficult to see without a flashlight, allowing his silhouette, face, and hands to emerge from the darkness only when illuminated.

Recommended Experience

For the strongest horror atmosphere:

Pages of the Peak + Pitch Black PEAK + FullDark

Pitch Black PEAK is not required to play Pages of the Peak. The mod can still be played with normal PEAK lighting and the standard day/night environment.

Compatibility with Pitch Black's optional Day/Night Cycle is continuing to be refined so Slenderman can react appropriately as the world moves between daylight and darkness.

Huge thanks to tony4twenty for creating Pitch Black PEAK โ€” and for being a cool dude to talk with!

๐Ÿ“– What Is Pages of the Peak?

Pages of the Peak adds a new horror objective to the normal PEAK climbing experience.

Every biome contains cursed Slenderman pages hidden throughout the playable area.

The basic idea is simple:

Find pages. Get stronger. Make Slenderman angrier. Survive the climb.

Pages provide a stamina regeneration reward to the player who collects them, but shared page progress also increases the threat level for everyone in the lobby.

Slenderman can begin by quietly observing players from a distance.

As more pages are collected, encounters become more aggressive and can escalate into full Hunts.

๐Ÿ“„ Collectible Pages

By default, each biome contains:

24 Pages

The amount is configurable through Gale / BepInEx.

Pages are placed around PEAK-authored item and spawn locations instead of being randomly thrown anywhere around the mountain.

The placement system attempts to avoid:

  • buried pages
  • pages inside mountains
  • inaccessible cliff geometry
  • out-of-bounds areas
  • cramped cracks
  • bad terrain surfaces

Every page has a synchronized world position in multiplayer so all players should see the same page in the same location.

Custom Slenderman-style page artwork is used when the included page AssetBundle is available.

๐ŸŽฎ How To Play

1. Start a normal PEAK run

Launch PEAK with Pages of the Peak enabled and begin a normal climb.

The mod initializes once the group enters the mountain.

2. Search for pages

Explore the current biome and look for floating Slenderman pages.

When close enough and looking at one, the interaction prompt appears:

[F] Grab Page

Press F to collect it.

3. Gain stamina regeneration

Every page collected grants the collecting player a configurable natural stamina regeneration bonus.

The default reward is:

+2% regeneration per page

This reward belongs to the player who actually collected the page.

In multiplayer, page progress is shared, while regeneration ownership is tracked per player.

4. Watch the threat increase

Collecting pages also increases the shared Slenderman threat.

More pages means:

  • more frequent encounters
  • a greater chance of Hunt encounters
  • faster late-game chase speeds
  • eventual forced sprint behavior
  • less time to relax between encounters

The mod intentionally becomes more dangerous as page progress rises.

5. Survive Slenderman

Slenderman has two primary encounter styles:

Watching

Slenderman appears somewhere nearby and observes the player.

He does not immediately chase.

If you stare directly at him:

  • PEAK's real Drowsy status begins increasing
  • optional static can appear
  • prolonged staring becomes dangerous

Looking away stops the gaze effect.

Watching is meant to create tension without immediately forcing a chase.

Hunt

During a Hunt, Slenderman actively pursues his selected target.

His chase speed scales with shared page progress.

The current default maximum ground and climbing speed multiplier is:

2.0x

Forced sprint behavior begins at a configurable page threshold.

Slenderman also uses 3D spatial Hunt audio, allowing players to hear his direction and distance while being chased.

โ˜ ๏ธ What Happens If Slenderman Catches You?

Pages of the Peak includes configurable catch behavior.

Under:

Hunt โ†’ Contact Outcome

you can choose:

Knockout Only

Every catch knocks the player unconscious temporarily.

Always Kill

Every successful Slenderman catch attempts a full PEAK death.

First Knockout Then Kill โ€” Default

Each player receives one mercy catch per biome.

The first time Slenderman catches that player:

Knockout

If he catches that same player again before the next biome:

Full Death

When the group advances to the next biome, each player receives their one mercy catch again.

This gives players a warning without making Slenderman harmless.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Watching & Drowsiness

Watching encounters use PEAK's actual Drowsy status rather than a completely separate fake meter.

If the player looks directly at Slenderman:

  • Drowsiness increases
  • optional static appears
  • gaze range and sensitivity can be configured

The normal PEAK pink Drowsy camera effect can optionally be suppressed while still allowing the actual status to increase.

This keeps the Slenderman encounter visually cleaner while preserving gameplay consequences.

๐Ÿ”ฆ Built-In Flashlight

Pages of the Peak includes its own flashlight.

Default key:

L

The flashlight supports configurable:

  • intensity
  • range
  • spot angle
  • inner spot angle
  • color temperature
  • position offsets
  • shadows
  • shadow strength
  • shadow bias

The flashlight is especially useful when playing with Pitch Black PEAK.

Depending on your Slenderman lighting configuration, the flashlight can be the primary way to reveal him in darkness.

๐ŸŒ˜ Slenderman Lighting

The custom Slenderman model uses modified URP/Lit materials so he reacts to PEAK's lighting rather than glowing unnaturally.

Pages of the Peak includes controls for:

  • material emission
  • reflections
  • albedo brightness
  • dark visibility
  • flashlight reveal strength
  • reveal fade speed
  • normal lighting
  • blackout compatibility

The goal is for Slenderman to behave normally during ordinary PEAK lighting while becoming much harder to see during blackout gameplay.

Pitch Black compatibility remains an active area of development, especially around its optional Day/Night Cycle.

๐Ÿ”Š Slenderman Hunt Audio

Hunt encounters include custom spatial audio.

The sound:

  • follows Slenderman
  • uses 3D positioning
  • fades based on distance
  • becomes more intense as he approaches

Watching encounters intentionally remain quieter.

This makes it possible to hear a Hunt approaching before Slenderman is directly visible.

๐Ÿƒ Threat & Encounter Timing

Slenderman is designed to become more active as pages are collected.

The encounter cooldown is configurable.

Current defaults:

CooldownMinSeconds = 20
CooldownMaxSeconds = 36
CooldownReductionPerPage = 1.25
CooldownFloorSeconds = 10

Early encounters have more breathing room.

As the page count rises, cooldowns become shorter and Slenderman becomes increasingly persistent.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Biome Progression

Pages are handled separately for each PEAK biome.

When the party advances to the next segment / campfire:

  • current page count resets
  • old pages are removed
  • a fresh page set is generated
  • stamina regeneration rewards reset
  • threat state resets
  • Slenderman encounter state resets
  • First Knockout Then Kill mercy resets

This prevents bonuses and threat from stacking permanently across the mountain.

๐ŸŒ Multiplayer

Pages of the Peak supports multiplayer and uses a host-authoritative state system.

The host controls:

  • page placement
  • page collection state
  • shared threat
  • encounter phase
  • Slenderman AI
  • target selection

Clients receive synchronized:

  • exact page locations
  • collected-page state
  • rewards
  • Slenderman phase
  • enemy identity
  • current target
  • attack state

All players should see the same pages in the same world positions.

Multiplayer Requirement

Every player should have Pages of the Peak installed.

For the best results:

  • use the same mod version
  • use the same page AssetBundle
  • use the same Slenderman AssetBundle
  • keep multiplayer configuration reasonably consistent

The mod will attempt to prevent incompatible Pages of the Peak builds from silently mixing in the same lobby.

Multiplayer is still considered experimental while wider public testing continues.

๐ŸŽฏ Multiplayer Targeting

The next encounter prefers the player who most recently collected a page.

Example:

Player 1 grabs a page:

Slenderman prefers Player 1

Player 2 grabs the next page:

Slenderman prefers Player 2

If the most recent collector is unavailable or dead, the mod can fall back to another valid player.

This helps ensure the person pushing page progress is also taking on the danger.
