VanillaPilePlus
Turns vanilla piles into 1x1 storage for their matching resources. Taking or adding items dynamically changes the pile's appearance. Uses existing build pieces and recipes.VanillaPilePlus
Turn Valheim’s vanilla resource piles into 1×1 storage containers. Add or remove materials and watch the pile’s appearance change with its contents.
Build the same vanilla pieces using their existing recipes, then open them like chests.
Version 1.0.1
How it works
Each newly built pile stores the resources spent on its construction: a wood stack starts with 50 Wood, while a copper stack starts with 30 Copper.
The single storage slot accepts only the pile’s matching resource. You can take materials out and put them back up to its capacity.
Taking the last item removes the empty pile. Dismantling or destroying a pile drops only its remaining contents, without an additional construction refund.
Features
- Storage for 24 existing vanilla pile types.
- Dynamic visuals using the original models and materials.
- Partial-pile placement from your inventory with Alt + left-click.
- Resource amounts saved with the world.
- Multiplayer storage through Valheim’s normal container system.
- Existing vanilla build pieces and recipes.
Supported piles and capacities
| Group | Resources | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Wood, Core Wood, Fine Wood, Yggdrasil Wood, Blackwood, Frostwood | 50 each |
| Other materials | Stone, Flint, Coal, Black Marble, Grausten, Obsidian, Bone Fragments, Charred Skulls | 50 each |
| Metal bars | Copper, Tin, Bronze, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Flametal, Gold | 30 each |
| Coin stack | Coins | 99 |
| Coin heap | Coins | 999 |
Visible parts represent proportions of the stored amount. For example, a wood stack displays all 12 original logs at 50 Wood, six logs at 25 Wood, and one log at 1 Wood. The large coin heap shrinks in volume as its contents decrease.
Place a partial pile from your inventory
- Carry a usable vanilla Hammer and stand within a Workbench’s build radius.
- Open your inventory and Alt + left-click a supported resource stack.
- Move the building preview to a valid location.
- Left-click to place it, or right-click / Esc to cancel.
Only the selected stack is transferred. Selecting 5 Copper creates a pile containing 5/30 Copper, which you can fill later. Each selection places one pile.
For Coins, stacks of 1-99 use the small coin stack; stacks of 100-999 use the large coin heap. Split stacks that exceed the matching pile’s capacity before selecting them.
Moving, splitting, merging or spending the selected stack cancels the selection. Normal placement restrictions, stamina use and hammer wear apply. This shortcut requires a workbench even when the pile’s regular recipe does not.
Crafting and building from containers
Compatible crafting and building mods can use materials stored in Piles through Valheim’s standard container system.
Search radius, permissions and resource filters depend on the other mod. Compatibility varies between implementations. VanillaPilePlus does not add crafting from nearby containers by itself.
Existing worlds
Only piles built with the mod enabled receive storage automatically.
To convert an existing ordinary pile, dismantle it and rebuild it with the mod enabled.
Multiplayer
Install VanillaPilePlus and its dependencies on the server and every client. All participants should use the same version.
Configuration settings are local. Use matching settings when playing together.
Installation
Install through Thunderstore / r2modman with the required dependencies, then launch Valheim through that profile.
For manual installation:
- Install BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360 or newer.
- Install Jotunn 2.30.2 or newer.
- Close the game and copy the DLL to:
BepInEx/plugins/VanillaPilePlus/VanillaPilePlus.dll
Configuration
The mod creates its configuration file on first launch:
BepInEx/config/dellarion.valheim.vanillapileplus.cfg
Common settings:
| Section | Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| General | EnablePileStorage | true |
Enables storage for newly built piles and partial-pile placement. |
| Logging | DebugLogging | false |
Enables detailed diagnostic logging. |
The generated file includes descriptions of its settings. Close the game before editing it, then restart.
Existing storage piles retain their contents and resource protections when you disable storage creation.
Uninstallation and save compatibility
Empty your storage piles before uninstalling the mod. Empty piles disappear. Move the resources to ordinary containers, save the world, exit and remove the mod.
The mod uses vanilla building pieces, so removing it leaves the world loadable. However, any remaining partial pile returns to its full vanilla appearance and construction refund. Its stored amount is unavailable without the mod.
Compatibility notes
- Mods that replace the same piles or attach their own containers may conflict.
- Changes to recipes or building mechanics may affect partial-pile placement.
- Pile colliders keep their original size as the visible contents decrease.
- Manual transfers and Take All are supported. Automatic Stack All into Piles is disabled.
