Changelog

0.5.0

New picture: MistVale. MistVale.fbx with its build menu icon, 2 m wide, 1 m tall and 0.1 m deep.

Because a new piece is added, the server and all players need 0.5.0.

0.4.0

New picture: AA. A sixth picture, aa.fbx, with its build menu icon. It is much larger than the others: 2 m wide, 2 m tall and 0.5 m deep, compared with 1 × 1 × 0.1 m for the existing frames. It is built at its original size, with the back against the wall.

Add new pictures by dropping in files. The fixed list is gone: every .fbx next to the DLL becomes a picture at startup, and <name>_icon.png beside it is its icon. The build menu name and the piece's identifier in the world both come from the file name. The six existing pictures keep their old identifiers, so frames that are already built are kept. The build script packs every model from models/ and converts .webp/.jpg icons to PNG automatically.

Because new pieces are added, the server and all players need 0.4.0.

0.3.0

ValFrames now contains exactly five fixed pictures: Cleo, Dennis, Dezzy, Dezzy Icon and Exo. The new models dennis.fbx and dezzyicon.fbx and their build menu icons are registered in the mod.

Custom pictures have been removed completely. The eight numbered custom slots, loading PNG/JPG files, the picture overlay component and the pictures folder are no longer part of the mod. Only the five included pictures remain, identical on every client.

The build script now checks that all five FBX files and their five icons are present, and packs only these fixed assets.

0.2.1

Pictures with a transparent background get a black one. A logo saved as a PNG without a background used to be hit or miss: the shader that lights the frame has no transparency, so whatever happened to be stored in those pixels showed through — white, black or leftovers.

The mod now puts such pictures on black when it reads them: fully transparent pixels become black, half transparent ones half as bright. What hangs on the wall is then an ordinary opaque picture. This happens once when the file is read, not every frame, and without a second surface in the frame that would fight the first one for the same depth.

Pictures without transparency are left unchanged.

0.2.0

Custom pictures. Eight more frames in the build menu, "Custom picture 1" to "Custom picture 8". Each shows the file with its number from the pictures folder next to the mod — 1.png to 8.png, .jpg works too. The mod creates the folder on first start, with short instructions inside.

Without a file, Dezzy's picture stays. The eight frames are built on the Dezzy model, and the custom picture is hung as a thin surface in the recess in front of it. Without a file, that surface is simply not drawn — a frame without a picture would be an empty tile, a frame with Dezzy is a picture.

Why fixed numbers instead of one frame per file found: a world remembers every frame built under its prefab name. A name that comes and goes with a PNG would have taken every frame built with it along at the next load — caused by a deleted file nobody would think of. So the eight slots always exist.

On a server, everyone sees their own file. Valheim does not transfer pictures. What is shared is that a frame hangs there and which slot it is; what it shows is up to each player. Anyone without a file for that slot sees the painted picture.

A swapped picture appears as soon as the frame is loaded again — walking away and coming back is enough, no restart. The build menu icon only follows at the next start, because the menu is built once. Pictures that are not square fill the frame and are cropped on the overhanging side instead of being stretched.

0.1.1

The pictures were mirrored. An FBX file is right-handed, Unity is left-handed — taking the numbers over unchanged does not rotate the model, it mirrors it. On a symmetrical box you never notice, on a logo with lettering you do right away. The mod now mirrors back along the X axis and reverses the triangle order to match, so the surfaces still face outward instead of being lit from inside.

0.1.0

The first version. Three framed pictures — Cleo, Dezzy and Exo — built at a workbench, found under Furniture in the build menu, 4 Fine wood and 2 Resin each.

Each frame is a clone of the item stand and inherits everything a piece on a wall needs: placement, ghost, wear, repair, removal. Its shape and its item slot were removed — a picture is decoration and holds nothing.

The mod reads the models at startup directly from the .fbx files next to the DLL, including the images embedded in them. It also applies the scale set on the object rather than in the vertices — without that, the frames would have ended up a metre deep in the wall instead of ten centimetres.

The mod is server synced: the server and all players need the same version.
