Potential Reforged

About

Configure the Forge of Potential success chance and what happens when refinement fails. The defaults are 65% success, no item destruction, and one level lost on a failed attempt. Successful refinement upgrades normally, and normal idol and material costs apply.

Surviving refinement keeps the original equipment item and its custom data, crafter information and attached mod data. Quality-based stats update normally, and refinement repairs the item to its modded maximum durability.

BreakOnFailure ReduceLevelOnFailure Failed attempt
false false Keep the current level.
false true Lose the configured levels, with a minimum level of 1.
true Either Destroy the item using the normal break refunds.

Requires BepInEx 5 for Valheim. Jötunn is not required. Use the Forge of Potential normally; the mod applies the configured rules to your attempts.

Configuration

The first launch creates BepInEx/config/Dyls123.PotentialReforged.cfg. Edit it with the game closed, or use a compatible in-game config manager. File edits require a reload or restart; config-manager changes apply to the next relevant action. Existing values are carried into the numbered sections automatically. If both an old and a new section contain the same setting, the new section takes priority.

Section / Setting Default Purpose
10 - Chances / SuccessChance 65 Success percentage; 0–100. Failure chance is the remaining percentage.
11 - Failure / BreakOnFailure false Destroy the item on every failed refinement. Overrides level-loss settings.
11 - Failure / ReduceLevelOnFailure true Lose levels when failure does not destroy the item.
11 - Failure / LevelsLostOnFailure 1 Levels lost on failure; 1–10, with a minimum final level of 1.
90 - Server / LockConfiguration true Lock all refinement settings to server administrators.

Server configuration

Install the mod on your client to use your own settings in single-player or on a server without the mod. Install the same version on the server to override the gameplay settings of clients running the mod. Server settings are locked to server administrators by default. Keybinds and display preferences stay local, and your local gameplay values return when you disconnect. Players without the mod do not gain its features.

All four refinement settings are synced when the mod is installed on the server.

Support

Epic Loot: enchantments, rarity and rolled values remain attached to surviving equipment.

BlacksmithingExpanded: existing bonuses and the original smith skill are preserved rather than recalculated for the refining player or new quality.

Other item-editing mods: most should also be supported when their changes are stored on the original item, because refinement preserves that item and its attached custom data.

Epic Loot and BlacksmithingExpanded are optional. Stackable items retain native handling; item destruction still uses native break refunds.

Manual installation

  1. Install BepInEx 5 for Valheim.
  2. Create BepInEx/plugins/Dyls123-PotentialReforged/ in the game installation or active mod-manager profile.
  3. Copy PotentialReforged.dll from the release ZIP into that folder.
  4. Keep only one copy of the DLL and launch the game to generate the config.

The versioned ZIP and Dyls123-PotentialReforged.zip use the same Thunderstore-compatible layout, with the DLL at the ZIP root. A mod manager installs the package and its declared dependencies automatically.
