Valheim

QoL Options

Less clicking, same Valheim. A pack of quality-of-life features that cut the tedious parts of the game without changing its balance: fill stations in one go, use materials from nearby chests, sort and restock, a trash slot, equipment slots that free up inventory space, appearance slots, recipe search, a crafting queue, building undo, a stability preview, portal destinations chosen on the map, taming timers, a parry hint, more to plant with the cultivator, and more.

Every feature can be switched on or off in-game, in Settings → QoL, and Steam achievements keep working.

Found a bug, have an idea or a question? Tell me right from the game: Settings → QoL → About → Contact opens a short form in your browser. It's anonymous, no account needed, and I read every message.

Features

Chests & Stations

  • Fill stations in one go: hold Left Shift and press E on a smelter, kiln, fire, torch or cooking station to fill it with everything it takes.
  • Use items from nearby chests: fuel and building or crafting materials can come from chests around the station or build spot, not only from your inventory (food for cooking stations still comes only from you). Locked chests and chests someone else has open are skipped.
  • Quick Stack: sends your items into nearby chests that already hold them (your hotbar stays put).
  • Quick Stack locks: hold Left Alt and click inventory slots or items to keep them with you; they show a padlock, and Sort leaves them where they are. Or choose in the settings to send only the item under the mouse.
  • Sort your inventory (the hotbar stays as it is) and the open chest: partial stacks are merged and items are grouped by kind, then by name.
  • Restock from nearby chests (the open one included): tops up the ammo, food and potion stacks you carry.
  • Q / R / S: small buttons under the equipment panel, and hotkeys while the inventory is open, for quick stack, restock and sort (the open chest, else your inventory). Hover a button to see what it does. A small S button above the chest's weight sorts the chest. The keys can be changed or turned off.
  • Trash slot: drop an item on it and confirm to delete it (hold Shift to skip the question).
  • Equipment slots: your worn helmet, chest, legs, cape, utility item and trinket get their own panel beside the inventory, so they don't take inventory space. Rows bought from a trader don't move them. When you die, Take All on your tombstone puts your gear back on. Turning it off moves your gear back into the inventory, still worn (with no room for it, it stays on); nothing is ever deleted. Turn it off before removing the mod, or the game drops the worn items at your feet on the next load.
  • Appearance slots: an Appearance button at the top of the equipment panel switches it to a second set of Head, Chest, Legs and Cape slots. Armor put there (dragged in, or right-clicked while they're shown) only changes how you look: your worn gear keeps its armor and effects, and an empty appearance slot shows it. Everyone sees your new look. Appearance items weigh nothing, unless you choose otherwise in the settings. A Dverger circlet worn or in the head appearance slot always gives its light.
  • Hide armor pieces: settings to hide your helmet, chest armor, leg armor or cape, whatever you wear; they still protect you.

Crafting

  • Recipe search: a search field above the recipe list of every crafting interface.
  • Crafting queue: a Queue button next to Craft lines up several crafts or upgrades.
  • Repair everything at once at a crafting station.

Building

  • Stability preview: while placing a piece, its preview is tinted with the support it would get there, in the hammer's colors (blue: full, green to red: weaker, red: it would fall).
  • Undo (Ctrl+Z with the hammer out): reverses your last 3 placements and removals. Materials are refunded or spent again, as if done by hand.
  • Area repair: with the hammer's repair tool, hold Attack to repair every damaged piece around you (same stamina and hammer wear per piece as by hand).
  • Deconstruct to inventory: materials from removed pieces go straight into your inventory, even past the weight limit.
  • Remove carts and ships with the hammer (empty cargo, nobody aboard or pulling).
  • Seasonal items all year: the Yule, Halloween and other seasonal pieces and recipes, any time of the year, with their normal materials.

Portals

  • Choose the destination on the map: hold Left Shift and press E on a portal. The map opens with a list of portals beside it; click a portal marker (the map's portal icon) or a name to travel there, with the usual loading screen. If the portal there is gone, you are brought back to the one you left. The usual portal rules still apply (no ores, no portals during boss fights...), and walking into a portal still takes you to the one with the same name. In single player or when hosting, every portal of the world can be chosen; on a server, the ones on your map. In a world without a map, the list opens on its own.
  • Portal markers: portals you build, look at or travel through get a marker on your map, with their name. The marker follows renames and goes away when the portal is taken down. Markers you place yourself are never changed. Share them with the cartography table like any marker.
  • Carts through portals: hold Left Shift and press E on a cart standing near a portal (not one you are pulling), or on the portal, to take the cart along: to the portal you choose on the map, or through the portal's link. On arrival it is set down beside you, load included. Ore in the cart follows the world's rule, as set by the host. The settings choose: off, stone portals only, or all portals.
  • Tamed creatures through portals: hold Left Alt and press E on a tamed creature near a portal to take it along the same way (Shift+E still renames it). A creature someone is riding can't go. The settings choose: off, stone portals only, or all portals.
  • Summons through portals: your summoned creatures following you (skeletons from the Dead Raiser and the like) come along on every portal trip, walking in or choosing on the map, and are set down beside you instead of vanishing. On the map, a button leaves them behind for that trip. Other players' summons stay with them. The settings choose: off, stone portals only, or all portals.
  • Indestructible portals (off by default): nothing breaks your portals, but the hammer can still take them down.

Taming

  • Taming at a glance: hover a creature to see how long taming still takes (paused while it's hungry or frightened), whether a tamed one is ready to breed or what stops it (hungry, frightened, too many of its kind nearby, no partner close by), how long until a pregnant one gives birth, and how long until a young one grows up.
  • Taming speeds: faster taming, breeding and growing up, up to 10x (1x, the normal game, by default).
  • Notice range while taming: a creature you are taming notices you from closer, so it gets frightened less often (the normal range by default).
  • Passive tamed creatures (off by default): tamed animals ignore enemies instead of getting frightened, so they keep breeding with monsters around. Creatures following you and summons still fight.

Farming

  • Expanded Farming (off by default): the cultivator also plants wild berry bushes, mushrooms, flowers and the trees the game has no seed for (Ancient Tree, Yggdrasil Shoot, Scorched Tree). Like the game's crops, each grows only in its own biome. A bush regrows its harvest, a mushroom or flower gives 3 once ripe, and a tree, planted with its own wood, grows to full size. Only the game's own plants go into the world, so everyone sees them and they stay if the mod is removed.
  • Batch planting (off by default): hold Left Alt while planting to plant a whole grid in one click (3 x 3 to start; the mouse wheel resizes it). Each plant costs the same as one by hand.
  • Plants grow in any biome (off by default): everything the cultivator plants grows anywhere; cold and heat still apply.
  • Growth speed: what you plant grows and regrows up to 10x faster (1x, the normal game, by default). Wild plants keep the game's pace.
  • Growing countdown: crops, saplings and what you plant show how long they have left to grow.

Combat & Survival

  • Sticky attack and block: hold Left Alt while clicking Attack or Block to keep it going without holding the button; click again to stop. Plain clicks stay as in the normal game. If your weapon breaks mid-attack, the same kind of weapon in the next slot is equipped and the attack goes on.
  • Auto eat: when a food is about to run out, the same food is eaten again from your inventory.
  • Equipment in water: weapons, tools, shields and torches stay in your hands while swimming, and you can use them. Swimming still drains stamina.
  • Parry hint: a shield after an enemy's name, above its health bar, when a perfect parry with what you are holding takes all of its attacks without staggering you or running out of stamina. It's crossed out when one of them would stagger you (counting how full your stagger bar is right now, and every hit of the attack) or can't be blocked. Your Blocking skill, the enemy's stars and the world's difficulty are counted in, so it can change mid-fight. It plays safe: when in doubt, it's crossed out.

Interface

  • Stats panel: a Stats button next to Skills shows kills, skill level-ups, time alive and more, per character.
  • Network info: a small line under the minimap that tells whether lag comes from your connection, the server or another player (ping, server delay, packet loss, who runs the creatures around you).
  • Camera zoom: zoom out farther, set separately for on foot, riding and steering a ship.
  • About and contact: Settings → QoL → About shows the mod's version, and its Contact button opens a short form in your browser to report a bug, suggest a feature or ask a question. It's anonymous: no account or email needed, and you leave a contact only if you'd like an answer.

Time & Weather (off by default)

Always day or night, a longer or shorter share of daylight, a forced weather, no misty weather (the Mistlands keep their mist) and a fixed wind for sailing. Only what you see: on a server, others keep the normal sky. For boats: a speed multiplier (up to 3x, sail and paddles) and an anchor, dropped and raised with a key at the helm; boats with nobody aboard can be anchored too.

Cheats (off by default)

For achievement hunting: almost no stamina or eitr use, up to 10x skill experience, never overweight, higher drop and trophy chances, and spawn rate, population and pack size multipliers (raids stay normal). Achievements still unlock. A Clear button removes the mark the game puts on a character that used the console's cheat commands.

Installing

  • Mod manager (recommended): install with r2modman or the Thunderstore app; BepInEx is installed for you.
  • Vortex: get it from the Nexus Mods page.
  • By hand: install BepInExPack Valheim, then copy the contents of this package into Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/QoL_Options/.

Settings are in-game under Settings → QoL, or in BepInEx/config/com.lorthan.valheimpureqolmodpack.cfg.

Removing the mod: first turn off Equipment slots in Settings → QoL, so your worn gear and appearance items move back into the inventory. Otherwise the game drops it at your feet the next time you load.

Multiplayer

Only you need the mod; it works alone, when hosting and on dedicated servers. Nobody else sees a difference, except where noted:

  • Drop and trophy chances and the spawn multipliers only apply to creatures and areas your game runs: always when playing alone or hosting, on a server only around you when you're the first one there.
  • Time & Weather only changes your own view; sleeping follows the server's clock.
  • Boat speed and the anchor work while your game is in charge of the boat (when you steer it, or are the nearest player).
  • Nearby chests, Quick Stack, Restock and the building features respect wards and locked chests like the normal game.
  • Quick Stack, Restock and nearby chests only change chests your game is in charge of. One another player's game is in charge of (usually because they are closer to it, or opened it last) is asked for first, like the normal game does; no mod needed on their side. If they're using it, your items stay with you and a message says to try again; for crafting and building, it can be used a moment later.
  • Everyone sees what Expanded Farming plants, players without the mod too. Planted ones grow by the mod's rules (their biome, the growth speed, any biome) while the player nearest to them has the mod.
  • The parry hint plays safe when other players are in the game: enemies hit harder for each player near you when the hit lands, so it counts all of them, and it can't see buffs on enemies another player's game runs. The shield can then be crossed out on a parry that would have held.
  • Indestructible portals protect a portal when the game puts you in charge of it or of its attacker (usually when you are the nearest player); players without the mod near the portal can still damage it.
  • A cart, tamed creature or summon another player's game is in charge of (they are closer to it) is asked for before the trip; that needs the mod on their side too.
  • Everyone sees your appearance slots and hidden armor pieces, players without the mod too. When one of them covers the Dverger circlet, only you see its light.
  • Taming, breeding and growing up speed, the notice range while taming and passive tamed creatures work on the creatures your game is in charge of (usually when you are the nearest player).

Languages

English and Brazilian Portuguese. Translations are plain text files in the Translations folder (one key=text per line); copy Portuguese_Brazilian.txt, name it after Valheim's language (Spanish.txt, German.txt...) and translate. Contributions are welcome.

Compatibility

Other mods that do the same job (chest pulling, quick stack, sorting, trash, equipment slots or a bigger inventory, appearance (transmog), crafting from containers, camera zoom, portal destinations, more plants for the cultivator) may conflict with the matching feature here. If so, switch that feature off in Settings → QoL.

Support

The quickest way to reach me is the Contact button in Settings → QoL → About: pick Bug, Suggestion or Question and write a few lines. It's anonymous (leave a contact only if you'd like an answer), and a bug report already knows which version of the mod you have. Suggestions are very welcome: they shape what comes next. You can also leave a comment on the mod's Nexus Mods page. If you enjoy the mod, a coffee is always appreciated ☕

Changelog

1.2.1

  • Fixed: looting your tombstone with a full inventory could leave gear behind. Worn gear and appearance items take no inventory room, but needed it on the way back. Your gear now stays in its slots in the tombstone, and Take All (or one press on the tombstone when everything fits) puts it back on and your appearance items back in their slots. Spare gear with no room left is put on if its slot is empty.
  • Fixed: items could end up in hidden cells of the equipment panel, out of reach. They now move back into your inventory as soon as there's room, stacks there are no longer topped up, and a controller's cursor stays on the cells that are shown.
  • Fixed: the Dverger circlet gave no light while an appearance item or Hide helmet covered it. It now gives its light whenever it's worn or in the head appearance slot, and your look stays as you chose it.

1.2.0

  • Farming: a new Farming page in Settings → QoL.
    • Batch planting (off by default): hold Left Alt while planting to plant a whole grid in one click; the mouse wheel resizes it. Each plant costs the same as one by hand.
    • Plants grow in any biome (off by default), and a Growth speed of up to 10x for what you plant (1x by default).
    • Growing countdown: crops, saplings and what you plant show how long they have left to grow.
  • The Cheats settings moved to "11. Cheats" to make room for "10. Farming"; your choices are kept.
  • Fixed: after Valheim's update 1.0.21, players with the Stats panel on (the default) couldn't die.
  • Fixed: the Stats panel's Overall numbers showed only part of a character's play (for older characters, a small part). They now show its whole record.
  • Fixed: nearby chests (crafting, building, filling stations) and Restock could lose or duplicate items with other players around, as Quick Stack could before 1.1.3. They now only change chests your game is in charge of and ask other players' games for theirs; Restock says when a chest was in use.
  • An error in one feature (after a game update, for example) now only switches that feature off, and the game goes on as without it.

1.1.3

  • Fixed: Quick Stack could lose items with other players around. A chest another player's game is in charge of (usually because they are closer to it or opened it last, or it's on a ship or cart they run) is now asked for first, the way the normal game does it, and filled once it's handed over. If someone is using it, or it isn't handed over in time, your items stay with you and a message says to try again.
  • Fixed: the Parry hint could show the shield for attacks that staggered you, mostly with other players around. It now counts what gets past the parry and your armor (it fills the stagger bar again), all the hits of an attack together (a projectile and its blast, several projectiles), the harder last hit of a combo, attacks that stagger through any block, and the stamina the parry takes. Enemies hit harder for each player near you when the hit lands, and buffs on enemies another player's game runs can't be seen from yours, so the hint now counts every player in the game and keeps a 25% safety margin: when in doubt, it's crossed out.

1.1.2

  • Taming: a new Taming page in Settings → QoL. Hover a creature to see how long taming still takes, whether a tamed one is ready to breed (or what stops it), how long until a pregnant one gives birth and how long until a young one grows up. Settings for faster taming, breeding and growing up (up to 10x), a shorter range at which a creature you are taming notices you, and passive tamed creatures that ignore enemies (off by default).
  • Parry hint: a shield after an enemy's name, above its health bar, when a perfect parry with what you are holding takes all of its attacks without staggering you. The shield is crossed out when one of them would stagger you (counting how full your stagger bar is right now) or can't be blocked.
  • About page (Settings → QoL → About): the mod's version, and a Contact button that opens a short anonymous form to report a bug, suggest something or ask a question.
  • The Cheats settings moved to "10. Cheats" to make room for "9. Taming"; your choices are kept.
  • Fixed: long setting descriptions on the first rows of Settings → QoL ran under the tab bar.

1.1.1

  • Summons through portals: your summoned creatures following you (skeletons from the Dead Raiser and the like) come along on every portal trip instead of vanishing, and are set down beside you. When choosing the destination on the map, a button leaves them behind. Off, stone portals only or all portals.
  • Appearance slots: an Appearance button at the top of the equipment panel shows a second set of Head, Chest, Legs and Cape slots. Armor put there only changes how you look; your worn gear keeps its armor and effects. Appearance items weigh nothing (a setting makes them weigh as usual).
  • Hide armor pieces: settings to hide your helmet, chest armor, leg armor or cape; they still protect you.

1.1.0

  • Portals: Shift+E on a portal opens the map to choose the destination among the portals marked on it, or from a list beside the map. If the portal there is gone, you are brought back. In single player or when hosting, every portal of the world can be chosen. In a world without a map, the list opens on its own.
  • Portal markers: portals you build, look at or travel through get a marker on the map, with their name; it follows renames and goes away when the portal is taken down.
  • Carts through portals: Shift+E on a cart standing near a portal takes it along, load included (ore in the cart follows the world's rule, as set by the host). Off, stone portals only or all portals.
  • Tamed creatures through portals: Left Alt+E on a tamed creature near a portal takes it along. Off, stone portals only or all portals.
  • Indestructible portals (off by default): nothing breaks portals, but the hammer can still take them down.
  • The Cheats settings moved to "9. Cheats" to make room for "8. Portals"; your choices are kept.
  • Clear the cheat mark (Settings → QoL → Cheats): removes the mark the game puts on a character that used the console's cheat commands ("Cheater!" in its stats), as if they had never been used.
  • Fixed: the console's cheat commands (debugmode and others) work again after confirmcheats.
  • Quick Stack locks: Alt+click inventory slots (or items) to keep what's in them out of Quick Stack; locked ones show a padlock and Sort leaves them alone. Or pick "Item under the mouse" in the settings: Q while pointing at an item sends only that item.
  • The Quick Stack key (Q) now works only with the mouse over your inventory, so a stray key press doesn't empty it.
  • Fixed: long setting descriptions in Settings → QoL showed behind the options below them.
  • Boats (Time & Weather, off by default): a speed multiplier for sail and paddles (up to 3x), an anchor key at the helm that holds the boat in place even with the sail up, and an option to anchor boats with nobody aboard.

1.0.1

  • Equipment slots: your worn helmet, chest, legs, cape, utility item and trinket get their own panel beside the inventory, so they no longer take inventory space. Rows bought from a trader don't move them. Turning it off moves your gear back into the inventory (with no room for it, it stays on); nothing is ever deleted. Turn it off before removing the mod, or the game drops the worn items at your feet on the next load.
  • Sort: sorts your inventory (the hotbar stays as it is) or the open chest, merging partial stacks and grouping items by kind, then by name.
  • Restock: fills up the ammo, food and potion stacks you carry from nearby chests.
  • Trash slot: drop an item on it and confirm to delete it (hold Shift to skip the question).
  • Inventory hotkeys while the inventory is open: Q quick stack, R restock, S sort. Small Q/R/S buttons under the equipment panel do the same, with tooltips; a small S button sorts the open chest. The keys can be changed or turned off.
  • Equipment in water: weapons, tools, shields and torches stay in your hands while swimming, and you can use them.
  • The recipe search field now shows as soon as a crafting station opens.
  • The Quick Stack button position settings are gone: the buttons now sit next to the equipment panel.
