Gradual transitions, seasonal weather, visuals and gameplay. Seasonal textures are generated from the game's own textures (no extra texture packs). Mountain, Ashlands and Deep North have no seasons.

Must be installed on the server and every client. The server decides the season and syncs it (no ServerSync needed).

Season cycle

  • The season follows the in-game day. Each season lasts DaysPerSeason days.
  • In the last TransitionDays of a season, the change happens in TransitionSteps stages, applied at night by default (SwapAtNight):
    • Weather and ground blend toward the next season.
    • Leaves, bushes and grass turn gradually, in patches: grass finishes at GrassStep, bushes at BushStep, trees when the new season starts (SmoothTransition).
    • The current season's effects thin out and the next season's start showing faintly (TransitionAmbience).
    • Going into winter it snows first and the snow settles a few stages later (the first snow always falls on the first night of the transition); coming out of winter, thaw rain comes before the snow melts.
  • Sleeping is safe: the right stage is always calculated from world time.

Visuals

Everything visual is per client (config section 2 - Visual) and can be turned off piece by piece.

  • Spring: strong dark-green leaves with white/pink blossoms and crimson clusters on the tips, purple/magenta flower tufts on the ground (Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mistlands and Plains), fireflies at night, butterflies by day. Mistlands also gets dragonflies.
  • Summer:
    • Darker leaves, golden grass tips, yellow/orange flower tufts, pollen and butterflies by day, fireflies at night, clearer sky (less rain, thinner fog).
    • Plains: golden grass, dust gusts, swirling dust devils, straw in the wind, grasshoppers and a golden haze on the horizon.
    • Swamp: dragonflies and gnat swarms over the water, low mist at dawn/dusk, twice the fireflies at night, bright green moss.
    • Mistlands: thinner mist by day, glowing spores, blue fireflies, pale moths, grasshoppers and gnats over the water.
  • Fall: orange/red/yellow leaves falling from the trees (not in the Swamp), gusts of dry leaves, straw/brown grass with red tips mixed with patches that stay green (FallGrassGreen), red flower tufts, morning ground fog, migrating bird flocks in V, moths at dusk, amber spores in the Mistlands.
  • Winter: bare trees and bushes (firs and pines keep a few dry branches with snow on top, WinterDryBranches), snowy ground and moss, footprints in the snow (the game's own snow step mark, for players and creatures, SnowFootprints), ice floes on the sea, no grass on the ground, snowflakes falling from big trees, glittering ice crystals on clear days, the game's own cold breath on every player outdoors, the Deep North aurora borealis on clear nights, crows, icy mist in the Swamp and ice crystals in the Mistlands.
  • Buildings, items, creatures and locations are never changed.

Gameplay (server-synced)

  • Winter:
    • No rain (snow/blizzards instead, thaw rain only at the very end of winter).
    • Cold by clothing: at night you freeze without cold-resistant gear; during the day only without clothes (no chest and no leg armor), dressed you're just Cold (DayFreezeNoClothes). Under a roof or inside a dungeon you don't freeze (ShelterNoFreeze). Torch, fire, lava or hot food also protect you.
    • Getting wet gives Chilled instead of Wet: 20% slower for 1 minute.
    • Wolf packs roam the map at night, spawned by the game's own spawn system, after Bonemass is defeated (WolfRequiredKey). Leftover wolves outside the Mountain disappear in spring.
    • Nothing grows and nothing can be planted (crops and saplings freeze until spring). Mature crops can still be harvested.
    • No wild berries, mushrooms, thistle, dandelion or seeds to pick.
    • Less game, torches burn faster.
    • Ice floes on the sea, lakes and rivers that you can walk on. Ships move small floes aside and break them when hitting fast (taking hull damage, IceFloeShipDamage); they grow back after a few minutes. Big icebergs don't move: the ship stops against them and takes damage. Everyone on the server sees the same floes moved and broken.
    • Bees hibernate: no honey is made or collected (WinterNoHoney).
  • Spring: faster breeding, berries and honey come back faster.
  • Summer:
    • More game and fish.
    • At the peak of summer, heat in the Plains during the day (get wet or find shade).
    • Getting wet in the Plains gives Refreshed instead of Wet: +15% stamina regen for 3 minutes.
  • Fall: bigger harvests, mushrooms come back faster, more Greylings and Trolls. Tamed animals drop twice as much (any star level).
  • Ocean hurricanes: huge swirling storms (~180 m tall) travel across the open sea (spring 2, summer 3, fall 4, none in winter), far apart, away from the coast and never in the Ashlands/Deep North seas. Each lasts about 10 minutes and dies when it reaches the coast. They pull ships toward the eye (full sail gets you out) and, in the eye, hit the ship and anyone on it. A warning shows when one gets close and the sky turns stormy near it. Everyone sees the same hurricanes.
  • Torch and lava: work like a campfire (warmth only, no Rested). Standing near lava also dries you.
  • Crop calendar: each crop has good seasons (grows faster) and off seasons (grows slower).
  • Seasonal creatures: damage, speed, health and spawn tweaks per season (e.g. stronger wolves and slower insects in winter). Fully configurable: Prefab:dmg1.2 spd0.85 hp1.1 spawn1.5 day (damage, speed, health, spawn rate, daytime only). Bosses and tamed creatures are never affected.
  • Traders (Haldor, Hildir, Bog Witch): prices change with the season (food is cheap in fall and twice the price in winter, seeds are never sold). In winter, when food is scarce, they sell honey, jams, jerky, berries and harvest (carrot, turnip, onion, barley, flax, Mistlands mushrooms), each item only after the boss that opens its biome (carrot after Eikthyr, barley and flax after Moder...). Seasonal lines when you talk to them. All configurable (TraderPrice*, TraderStock*).
  • The season icon tooltip shows only the buffs and debuffs the season gives your character.

Season timer (SeasonTimer, server-synced)

How players see the next season change (status icon, its tooltip and messages):

  • hours (default): real-life time left, e.g. 2h 30min (sleeping makes it come sooner).
  • days: in-game days left, e.g. 3 days.
  • immersive: no countdown, only the name and line of the current phase. Each season has 4 phases:
    • Spring: Awakening · Blossom · Renewal · Fullness
    • Summer: Rising · Growth · Peak · Waning
    • Fall: Turning · Harvest · Farewell · Dusk
    • Winter: Silence · Endurance · Deep Cold · Rebirth

With devcommands on, the season command always shows the real time.

Languages / translations

  • The mod comes in English and Portuguese (Brazil): messages, tooltips, commands, trader lines and every config description.
  • Language = auto (config section 0 - Language) follows the language chosen in the game. You can also set it by hand (English, Portuguese_Brazilian...).
  • Translate it into your language: open BepInEx/config/ValheimSeasons/translations/, copy English.txt, rename it to your language using Valheim's name for it (German.txt, Russian.txt, Spanish.txt, French.txt, Polish.txt...) and translate the right side of each key = text line. Missing lines stay in English. Config descriptions switch too.
  • Made a translation? Send it on Discord and it can ship with the mod!

Config

BepInEx/config/ValheimSeasons/ValheimSeasons.cfg

  • Sections marked (server) come from the server and are synced to everyone: 1 General, 3 Cold and heat, 4 Sea ice, 5 Wolf packs, 6 Plants and harvest, 7 Animals and creatures, 8 Traders, 10 Hurricanes.
  • Sections marked (each player) are per client: 0 Language, 2 Visual (colors, flowers, particles, aurora...), 9 Other.
  • Generated textures are cached in BepInEx/config/ValheimSeasons/cache/ (delete it to regenerate).
  • Live reload: save the .cfg and the changes apply in a few seconds, no server restart needed.
  • Typos in the config (e.g. 1,2 instead of 1.2, a creature name that doesn't exist) are reported in the BepInEx log.
  • Weak PC? Lower SpringFlowerDensity to 1, turn off particle effects in section 2, or turn off SmoothTransition (fewer texture swaps). Use season perf to see what costs FPS.

  • A estação segue o dia do jogo.

  • Construções, itens, criaturas e locais nunca mudam.

Mecânicas (sincronizadas pelo servidor)

  • Inverno:
Todo mundo no servidor vê as mesmas placas afastadas e quebradas.
