GaS-QuestSpawner

Personal hunting zones connected to GearAndStorage quests. Accept a kill quest, find its red circle on the map and enter it to begin the hunt.

Language / Jazyk / Sprache

English: The mod follows Valheim's language: English, Czech or German. Other languages use English for mod-owned text. Configuration Manager labels and descriptions are translated; prefab names and configuration keys remain stable. Custom quest text belongs to its author and is not automatically translated. See LOCALIZATION.md in the package.

Requirements

  • BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350.
  • GearAndStorage 0.5.17 or newer with its quest integration API.
  • Install the same spawner and GearAndStorage versions on the server and all clients. This is not a server-only mod.

The mod manager installs the dependencies. This package contains only the spawner DLL; it does not bundle another GearAndStorage copy. Epic Loot is not required.

Hunting zones

  • Each unfinished kill objective gets its own personal map circle when suitable terrain can be found in the configured distance range, 500–1000 metres by default, from where the quest becomes active.
  • Vanilla creatures use strict native biome assignments, while unlisted modded creatures use their loaded natural spawn rules. The search also checks terrain rules, visits nearer samples first with 25-metre radial steps, and does not load distant terrain just to spawn enemies.
  • The selected biome is saved with the zone and checked for every creature spawn. A circle crossing a biome border cannot place its creatures on the wrong side. Old zones with an invalid biome are removed and automatically located again.
  • Aquatic targets such as leeches select water inside their native biome and honor the creature's natural minimum and maximum water depth. The player may activate the circle from any point inside it.
  • Spawns begin only while the owner of the active quest is inside the circle, after a short streaming delay. Other players may join and fight after activation, but do not activate an inactive zone.
  • Leaving pauses new spawns. Completing the kill objective, abandoning or completing the quest removes the circle and stops its spawns.
  • Every spawner-created creature killed by any player inside its circle counts as one kill for that circle's objective, including stronger relatives and minibosses. Both the killer and victim must be inside. Ordinary world creatures keep GearAndStorage's normal prefab-based credit rules.
  • Creatures are part of the shared world and visible to other players. A party member can kill a creature spawned for the quest owner; the kill advances the owner's quest once.
  • Leftover creatures despawn after about 60 seconds without their active owner, or after wandering over 25 metres beyond the circle. Cleanup gives no kill credit or drops. Unloaded creatures are cleaned up when streamed back in.
  • Live population is capped. After remote death or cleanup the conservative population record may delay replacements by up to 90 seconds.
  • Zones persist with the character for the current world and quest attempt. A reaccepted quest gets a fresh attempt; old enemies do not advance it.

Difficulty in mod configuration

Edit BepInEx/config/mkova.GaSQuestSpawner.cfg, or use Configuration Manager. There is no separate difficulty menu in the game world. In multiplayer all gameplay settings come from the server. Clients mirror those values and cannot override them while connected. Restart after editing server configuration files.

  • Easy: basic target creatures with 0 stars and no elites. Up to 12 ordinary creatures alive; batches of 3 every 12 seconds.
  • Normal: mostly basic creatures with some stronger relatives, such as shamans in greyling hunts, randomly 0–1 stars. Up to 14 ordinary creatures alive; batches of 3 every 11 seconds.
  • Hard: basic creatures, stronger relatives, larger enemies and elites, randomly 1–2 stars. Up to 16 ordinary creatures alive; batches of 4 every 10 seconds.
  • VeryHard: mostly elite target creatures, plus one named miniboss per zone, randomly 2–4 stars. Up to 18 ordinary creatures alive; batches of 5 every 9 seconds.

Large creatures use separate limits on every difficulty: at most 3/4/5/6 alive from Easy through VeryHard, spawned in batches of 1/1/1/2 every 18/16/14/12 seconds. The configurable LargeCreatures prefab list defaults to Troll, Abomination, StoneGolem, Lox, SeekerBrute, Gjall, Morgen, Fallen Valkyrie, Frost Troll and Jotun Warrior.

The difficulty determines displayed stars independently of creature role. Minibosses remain ordinary named creatures; they do not introduce new models or special abilities and are not imported Epic Loot bounty bosses. A miniboss is created once per zone, including if it later despawns.

Quest rewards never change. The quest JSON controls item and skill rewards. Creatures retain ordinary game/mod drop behaviour.

ZoneRadius defaults to 70 metres and supports 40–100 metres for new zones. SpawnDistanceMin and SpawnDistanceMax default to 500 and 1000 metres; they control the search band for newly selected zones. FamiliesJson maps target prefabs to Strong, Large and Boss ordinary creature variants. Defaults cover greyling/greydwarf, skeleton, draugr, fuling, wolf and seeker families. Other targets fall back to stronger versions of themselves.

BiomeOverridesJson maps exact target prefab names to allowed Valheim biome names. The included vanilla mapping is strict; separate genuinely valid multiple biomes with commas. Server settings control this map in multiplayer. Prefabs missing from the map retain automatic SpawnSystem detection for mod compatibility.

AquaticCreatures identifies water targets; defaults are Leech, Serpent and BonemawSerpent. Modded aquatic prefabs can be appended as a comma-separated list.

Bosses and supported creatures

Any quest containing a real boss prefab is excluded from hunting zones entirely. Boss summoning and altars remain unchanged. Putting a real boss into a family mapping does not allow it to spawn.

Land creatures and water creatures with loaded natural SpawnSystem definitions are supported, including modded creatures with suitable rules. Dungeon-only targets are not supported. If no suitable point exists in the distance band, the mod reports the effective server-synced range and retries after a minute; the quest remains completable normally.

Loaded base protection is checked before spawning. An unloaded base may not be detectable at initial map placement, so a marked area can still have blocked spawn locations when visited. Quest waves do not require the natural spawn time of day or progression key, but geographic checks remain in effect.

Quest creation

Use GearAndStorage's existing KillReqs with exact prefab names. No spawner-specific JSON fields are necessary. Place quest*.json directly in BepInEx/config/GearAndStorage/Quests/ on the server (or locally in single-player).

The package includes a Czech quest authoring cheatsheet in docs/CHEATSHEET_QUESTY_CS.md and opt-in JSON examples in docs/examples/. Examples are not automatically activated.

Validation

The author verified the two-player scenario in game: a party member killed a creature spawned for another player's hunting zone and quest progress was applied correctly. Automated tests cover biome and aquatic defaults, all star ranges, large-creature limits, configurable distance sampling, server-authoritative multiplayer difficulty, zone boundaries, owner and killer credit, quest-attempt isolation and the real GearAndStorage network relay. Version 1.0.7 passed 38,009 assertions and builds against the author's installed Valheim assemblies.
