Valheim Stealth Opportunity
A Stealth Opportunity page in the Compendium when sneaking here trains at full rate and no nearby enemy can reach you, with the exact XP rate, and a Train Sneaking key that circles crouched until stamina runs low.Valheim Stealth Opportunity
Sneak is the slowest skill to train, and the game never tells you when a spot is worth it. This mod adds a Stealth Opportunity page to the Compendium, listed only when:
- sneaking here trains Sneak at full rate: at least one enemy is within its view range (or 10 m), and none of them is alerted;
- none of those enemies can walk to you: the game's own pathfinding, for each enemy's own navmesh size, finds no complete path. Flying enemies always can.
A rock in a lake, a ledge above a fuling camp, the far side of a wall: the page tells you the spot is safe, and Train Sneaking (F9) does the walking.
While the opportunity lasts, a Stealth Opp. icon (the Sneak skill picture) also sits among your status effects at the top right of the screen, next to Rested or Shelter. It is checked once a second, and it is only a display: nothing is added to your character.
Stealth Opportunity
Enemies in stealth range
Greyling 14 m no path to you
Sneak experience rate
x1 Sneak skill step
x1 Enemy in stealth range (x0.1 with no enemy near, or with one alerted)
x1 Status effects (none of yours changes Sneak gain)
x1 World skill gain rate (world modifier)
= Gain per second of sneaking : 1
Level 23 to 24: 12.4 / 55.8, about 0:44 of sneaking
Stamina while sneaking
3.1/s: base 5, skill x0.62, equipment +0%, effects +0%
A full bar (75) lasts 0:24 of sneaking; no regeneration while you sneak.
How Sneak experience works
Straight from Player.OnSneaking:
- A timer runs only while you move crouched (crouch animation, on the ground, speed above 0.1). Standing still crouched pauses it, it does not reset it. Every second of it is one gain.
- A gain is
skill step × range × (1 + status effects) × world rate:- range is 1 when an enemy is in stealth range and none in range is alerted, 0.1 otherwise — you do learn a little sneaking alone in your base;
- status effects are any effect that raises Sneak or all skills;
- world rate is the world modifier for skill gain.
- A level takes
floor(level + 1)^1.5 × 0.5 + 0.5gains. - Sneaking costs
5/s × lerp(1, 0.25, √(skill/100)), plus equipment and effect modifiers. Stamina does not regenerate while you sneak, and at zero the game stands you up.
Train Sneaking
Press F9. The character crouches and walks a small circle around the spot, until stamina drops to 8 %, then waits, still crouched (free while standing still), until it is full again, and starts over. Without an enemy in range it still works, at 0.1.
Anything you do stops it: moving, attacking, blocking, jumping, dodging, crouching, running, auto-run, using an item or the hotbar, interacting, sheathing, emotes. Switching windows (Alt-Tab) does not. It also stops on its own if you swim, die, teleport, sit or enter build mode.
