Pig Riding – raise your boar, saddle it, ride it into battle

Tame a boar and it grows up beside you: every walk together and every enemy it finishes makes it bigger and stronger, up to level 10. Once it is big enough to carry you, put a saddle on it and ride: it trots, runs, gores, charges and leaps on your command. Give it light or heavy barding for a fight, saddlebags for your load, and later a war harness that binds all three. Saddle, barding and bags start in the Meadows, where the boars live, and get better with the materials of each biome after that.

Now and then a wild boar is a Boarborn, a rare boar with golden, ash-grey or night-black bristles. It is born bigger, grows to twice a boar's size, gets far more health and tusk with every level, and once tame, when it falls it sleeps off its wounds instead of dying.

No other mod is needed. Works next to Wolf Riding, Better Riding and Starborn Breeding.

Piece What it does Crafted at Cost (quality 1)
Boar Saddle lets you ride the boar Workbench (level 2) 4 deer hide, 6 leather scraps, 4 wood, 2 resin
Light Boar Barding armour and health, no slowdown Workbench (level 2) 6 deer hide, 8 leather scraps, 4 resin
Heavy Boar Barding much more armour and health, slower Workbench (level 2) 10 wood, 10 leather scraps, 4 deer hide, 6 flint
Boar Saddlebags 4 to 20 slots of storage Workbench (level 2) 4 deer hide, 6 leather scraps, 2 wood
Light / Heavy Boar War Harness saddle, barding and bags in one Artisan table a saddle, a barding and saddlebags of quality 5 or better, 10 linen thread, 2 lox pelt, 4 black metal

Growing up

Every tame boar has a level from 1 to 10.

  • Experience: 2 for every 25 m it walks beside you (following you or under your saddle), 15 for every enemy it finishes. "Stay" gives nothing. Level 2 needs 50, level 5 needs 500, level 10 needs 2250 – about 28 km of walking together, less with fights.
  • Size: a plain boar grows from its own size to 1.5 times at level 10. Stars add the game's own size on top (★1 1.1, ★2 1.2); boars with more stars from Starborn Breeding keep growing, 0.1 per star.
  • Strength: a plain boar gains 40 % health and 10 % tusk per level.
  • Follow and stay: tame boars now take commands like wolves. Press E on a tame boar to have it follow you or stay.
  • The hover line under the boar's name shows its level and experience.

Level 4 · 312/500 XP Too small to carry you yet

Big enough to ride

A boar carries a rider once it is 1.2 times a boar's size (config RideMinSize). That is:

Boar Rideable from
Boarborn level 1
two-star boar level 1
one-star boar level 3
plain boar level 5

A smaller boar happily wears barding and saddlebags; the saddle waits until it has grown.

The Boarborn

One wild boar in 20 is a Boarborn (config BoarbornChance). You know it by its bristles – gold like Gullinbursti, Freyr's boar, ash-grey or night-black – and by its name.

  • It takes half as long again to tame.
  • It is born at 1.25 times a boar's size and grows to twice a boar's size at level 10.
  • Health: five times a boar's per level, 50 at level 1 and 500 at level 10 (twice and three times that with one and two stars).
  • Tusks: 1.5 times a boar's at level 1, six times at level 10.
  • It does not die. A tame Boarborn that falls sleeps for three minutes and wakes with 30 % health. While it sleeps nothing can hurt it. A blow from a player (the butcher knife) still kills it.
  • Blood: a piglet of a Boarborn sow grows into a Boarborn one time in four (config BoarbornInheritChance). Piglets of plain boars never do.

Seven qualities, seven biomes

Each piece is upgraded like any vanilla item, but every quality is made at the station of its biome and asks for that biome's materials.

Quality Biome Station Materials (saddle)
1 Meadows Workbench, level 2 deer hide, leather scraps, wood, resin
2 Black Forest Forge troll hide, bronze, leather scraps
3 Swamp Forge, level 2 iron, deer hide, leather scraps
4 Mountains Forge, level 3 wolf pelt, silver, leather scraps
5 Plains Artisan table lox pelt, linen thread, black metal
6 Mistlands Black forge scale hide, carapace, blue jute
7 Ashlands Black forge, level 3 asksvin hide, flametal, Morgen sinew

The look changes with the quality: raw deer leather, wooden slats and undyed wool in the Meadows; troll hide and bronze in the Black Forest; dark leather, iron and red wool in the Swamp; silver and white wolf pelt in the Mountains; black leather, black metal and linen in the Plains; scale hide, carapace and blue jute in the Mistlands; asksvin hide and flametal in the Ashlands.

Putting tack on

  1. Tame a boar.
  2. Use the piece on it: point at the boar and press its hotbar key.
  3. To take it off, point at the piece (saddle, bags or barding) and press Shift + E. It drops beside the boar with its quality.

A boar wears one piece at a time. To ride, fight and carry at once, bind a war harness. Bags must be empty before they come off. A boar that dies drops its tack and everything in its bags.

Riding

  1. Point at the saddle and press E to mount.
  2. Steer with the mouse: W trots, Shift runs, S stops, block turns on the spot.
  3. E gets you off.
Key On the boar
Attack a gore with the tusks (10 mount stamina)
Secondary attack a charge: almost a second straight ahead at 1.6 times the speed, then a gore that hits 75 % harder and throws the target back (25 stamina)
Jump a leap forward (15 stamina)
  • Running, goring, charging and leaping use the boar's stamina, shown next to its health like on the lox. Your riding skill halves the cost of running, as on the lox.
  • Out of breath: without stamina the boar will not gore, charge or leap until it has rested.
  • The charge gores at once when an enemy comes into reach of the tusks.
  • A ridden boar does what you say. Standing still, it waits instead of running after enemies (config MountFightsOnItsOwn).

Barding

Quality Light: armour / health Heavy: armour / health / speed
1 Meadows 4 / +5 % 8 / +10 % / −18 %
2 Black Forest 7 / +10 % 14 / +20 % / −17 %
3 Swamp 10 / +15 % 20 / +30 % / −16 %
4 Mountains 13 / +18 % 26 / +36 % / −15 %
5 Plains 16 / +21 % 32 / +42 % / −14 %
6 Mistlands 22 / +25 % 44 / +50 % / −12 %
7 Ashlands 28 / +30 %, fire resistant 56 / +60 % / −10 %, fire resistant
  • Light barding is a padded coat with studs: it never slows the boar.
  • Heavy barding adds overlapping plates over back and neck and a brow plate. Better smithing makes them lighter, so the heavy barding slows less at higher quality.

Saddlebags

Point at the bags and press E: they open like a chest. They hold 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 16 and 20 slots from quality 1 to 7. While someone rides the boar, its bags stay shut, for the rider too: get off to reach them.

War harness

The light and the heavy war harness bind a saddle, a barding of that weight and saddlebags into one piece. Binding needs all three parts at quality 5 or better and is done at the artisan table. The harness takes the quality all three reach, and the table uses the cheapest parts that get there. A harness can then be upgraded to quality 6 and 7.

The real thing

  • Armour works like yours. A hit of more than twice the armour loses the armour value; a smaller hit is cut to damage² / (4 × armour). 100 slash against heavy barding of quality 1 (armour 8) leaves 92.
  • Health grows with the level first, then the barding adds its share on top. A wounded boar keeps its health fraction when it levels up or tack goes on or off.
  • Mount stamina: the saddle gives 100 to 225 stamina from quality 1 to 7. A running boar uses 1 per second, like the lox.
  • Size is real: the boar, its collider, its saddle and its rider's seat all grow together.
  • What the mod does not change: how fast plain boars grow tame (a Boarborn takes half as long again), how long they stay fed, what they eat and how piglets are born.

Configuration

BepInEx/config/zap.pigriding.cfg

Gameplay (server-synced, admin only)

  • Boars: creatures that can wear tack and grow up (default Boar).
  • RideMinSize: how big a boar must be to carry a rider (default 1.2; 0 lets every tame boar be ridden).
  • BoarsFollow: tame boars follow and stay on command (default on).
  • MountFightsOnItsOwn: a ridden boar may chase enemies while standing (default off).
  • TameBoarsGrow, XpScale, PlainMaxSize, BoarbornMaxSize: growing up.
  • BoarbornChance, BoarbornInheritChance, FallenBoarbornSleep, SleepSeconds: the Boarborn.
  • RunStaminaDrain, GoreStamina, ChargeStamina, LeapStamina, LeapUp, LeapForward: riding costs and the leap.
  • ArmorScale, HealthScale: scale all barding.
  • Quality1 … Quality7: station per quality as prefab:level.
  • SaddleQ1 … SaddlebagsQ7, WarHarnessQ5 … WarHarnessQ7: recipes as Item:amount,Item:amount.

Client

  • ShowRidingHints: shows the riding keys when you mount.

Multiplayer and compatibility

  • Everyone on a server needs the mod. Tack, level and the Boarborn mark are stored in the boar's own data, so all players see the same boar.
  • Better Riding: on a boar, Pig Riding's gore, charge and leap replace Better Riding's mount attack and jump, so nothing fires twice. Other mounts keep Better Riding's controls.
  • Wolf Riding: both mods share the saddle hooks; wolf tack fits only wolves, boar tack only boars.
  • Starborn Breeding: boars with three or more stars keep growing with every star and carry a rider from level 1.

Deutsch

Wachsen: 2 EP je 25 m gemeinsam gelaufen, 15 EP je Todesstoß.
