General Description

Brittle and beautiful. Elegant and fragile. Cutieflies are small butterfly like insects with wings akin to glass. They fly peacefully on the forested moons of the thistle nebula. They have a thin body with two pairs of brightly colored wings. Its pattern is similar to that of the real world monarch butterfly.

Though seemingly fully developed, these are but the larva of a much bigger threat...

Gameplay

Flies around gently, occasionally landing. Poses no direct threat, however grazing, stunning or hitting it will break and kill its delicate body, releasing an alert pheromone. A trigger for the adult version of this creature, the Monarch.

Lore

A small 4 winged insect with wings akin to glass. The crystalline structure of the wings refracts various light waves, giving them their color. Though they resemble adult butterflies, Cutieflies are the larval state of the Monarch. They are docile in this stage and feed off of plant life. When threatened or killed, these insects release a distress pheromone, attracting the anger of the adult dormant Monarchs below the surface. When a Cutiefly has reached maturity, it will burrow deep below, forming a beautiful glistening cocoon and metamorphosing into a massive Monarch. Some nests of these creatures have been found deep below the soil, however every nest discovery has lead to tragedy.

Strategies

Avoid touching Cutieflies or killing them directly. Any form of stun of damage will kill them however only player dealt deaths will result in a Monarch spawning. When no Monarchs are spawned, the first Cutiefly to die will be guaranteed to spawn a Monarch. If one or more Monarchs exist on the moon, each kill of a Cutiefly will have a 50% chance of spawning a Monarch instead. At around 6 or 7pm in the day, all Cutieflies will start to fly up and vanish, making the moon safer to traverse. On each Monarch spawn, 2-4 Cutieflies will be spawned with it, capping at a max of 15.

Dev History

The cutiefly is one of the oldest creatures in the mod, being released in the mod's intitial release, alongside snailcats, wallets and meteor showers. They used to be harmless and unkillable, also able to be ridden (Good luck doing that now!). However it was reworked in the major V1.0.0 Oxyde update. The inspiration for the rework comes from the Empress of light boss and her butterfly spawner from terraria, as well as visual inspiration from the kaiju Mothra and the monarch butterfly. The general shape of the wings was also inspired by lunar moths. The giant death beam was made by Siphonife, one of the creators of Surfaced and modeler for other projects such as the Pjonk goose enemy.
