General Description

A hulking mass of aggression. Skulking the woodlands of the forest moons, this gorilla like giant possesses a violent temperament towards any small life. Its armed with a pair of huge muscular arms which it uses to move around and crush its prey. It has a pair of eyes with a gaping mouth full of jagged teeth. Its body is covered in branch like protrusions and its skins is akin to mangrove wood.

Nothing is safe from its rage, however there's always a bigger fish.

Gameplay

When it spawns, it roams around the moon in search of anything to kill and eat. If it finds smaller creatures, it will stand up, beat its chest and then crush them, eating them shortly after. If a player is in its line of sight long enough it will get angry, banging its chest, each bang damaging nearby players. Then it will run and grab them before smashing them into the ground and throwing them far away. The driftwood can be set on fire by fire weapons and explosions, enraging it but promptly killing it after. It can also be stunned and eaten by the Redwood Titan.

Lore

A member of the giant family, it shares many similarities with the other giants. Notably a wood like or plant like appearance and a childish intellect. Its intellect being akin to that of a temper throwing child. The Driftwood Menace has a good sense of sight as it is a mainly carnivorous creature, feeding on the corpses of recently slain prey. It is also prey itself for the much larger and more docile Redwood Titan. It is highly territorial, patrolling the expanse of its domain, making any intruder regret stepping inside. When threatened, it is capable of hitting its chest with its massive arms, creating powerful shockwaves. Its arms are capable of immense force when slamming down, delivering a crushing blow. However brutish it may seem, it has been seen exercising a delicate curiosity to things such as Cutieflies and Snailcats, refusing to attack them. This fascination may extend to the employees, to which the Driftwood grabs and analyzes before hitting them on the floor and throwing them away. This is believed to either be a playful instinct or an analysis of a creatures resilience and danger to it and its territory. The Driftwood remains a very misunderstood creature, showing hyper aggression as well as peaceful coexistence. Its volatile nature however makes it remain a huge issue for scrap collection.

Strategies

Try to avoid being in its line of sight, its aggression meter builds faster the closer you are and if you have a weapon in your hands. Fire and explosives are powerful weapons, as they will set it on fire, angering it but killing it after a few seconds. Its throwing grab can actually be used to launch yourself out of danger or to higher places however it can be inconsistent. Getting thrown by it will not deal any fall damage. Hiding in small spaces can prevent it from reaching you when its angry. Much like the forest keepers, the driftwood's grab can be interrupted with a stun grenade of zap gun, releasing the player. Its attacks deal low damage though its highly aggressive nature will chip away at you if you're not careful. When a Redwood Titan is near, the Driftwood Menace will run away as a priority, trying to avoid being eaten.

Dev History

The Driftwood giant is an enemy that predates Code Rebirth, being one of the 2 enemies implemented into the Giant specimens mod. It was later ported over and reworked into Code Rebirth along side the Redwood giant in V0.6.0. The original driftwood concept art for giant specimens came from Flameburnt. It was originally known as the mangrove giant, though it was implemented as the Driftwood giant in Giant specimens. The original model was made by Xu Xiaolan and featured very high poly teeth and a stretchy face.
