Plant Craft Cook RootsAndRemedies
49 smoked and dried dishes, a herb garden and 21 improved potions. Works on its own, better with ImmersiveTrader.Roots & Remedies

Smoked and dried food, a small herb garden and improved potions for Valheim.
Roots & Remedies works on its own — and it is better with ImmersiveTrader.
BETA: the mod works in single-player and multiplayer, but bugs and unexpected behaviour may still occur. Please report issues on the Discord HypnoMODS server.

Roots & Remedies adds no new biome and no new tier. It gives you more to do between the bosses: grow herbs, preserve the food you already cook and brew better potions. Everything is built from things Valheim already has, so it fits a vanilla playthrough from the Meadows onward.
At a glance
- 49 dishes × 3 qualities = 147 smoked or dried foods
- Up to 6 % off stamina or Eitr costs (or on stamina regeneration), per stat
- 21 improved potions: +20 % duration, or −20 % cooldown
- 4 herb crops, oyster and rosemary planters, mosquito traps and flytraps
- 8 buildable pieces and 12 garden materials
- Starter items in the world: rare wild plants and a chance of one item in chests, split by biome
- Single-player, host/client and dedicated server
- Standalone. ImmersiveTrader is optional, and recommended
Solo, or together with ImmersiveTrader
The mod is complete either way. What changes is how you get the garden starters (seeds, flowers, mycelium, Rosemary Root, Live Flytrap, Clay, Mosquito Nets, the Press Crank).
| Roots & Remedies alone | With ImmersiveTrader (recommended) | |
|---|---|---|
| Garden starters | Found in the world: chests and rare wild plants | Rewards of the traders' story quests, plus wild plants |
| How it feels | Explore, loot, get lucky | Earn them from people with names and stories |
| Food, garden, machines, potions | Everything | Everything |
| Extra | — | 14 traders, contracts, cargo, reputation, scrolls and 33 story quests |
Why it is better together: the two mods are made by the same author as a pair. With ImmersiveTrader 1.1.0 or newer, the traders of the Meadows, Black Forest and Swamp hand out the garden starters as you follow their quest chains, so the garden grows with your story instead of with your luck at chests. Nothing needs to be configured: Roots & Remedies notices ImmersiveTrader by itself.
Playing solo: install only Roots & Remedies. The starters then turn up in chests and as wild plants, and nothing of the mod is locked.
You can also mix the two, or force one source, with the ItemSource setting: see Where the starter items come from.

Smoked & dried food
Build a Wicker Drying Rack or a Clay Smokehouse (Hammer → R&R). Put up to 12 cooked dishes inside and add wood: 4 wood per dish, one dish finished every 12 game hours (about 10 real minutes). The food you load is shown on the shelves.
The wood you burn decides the quality, and it stays locked until that wood is used up:
| Wood | Quality | Extra duration | Extra health regen | Bonus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood, Core Wood | Poor | +5 min | +1 / tick | 1 % |
| Fine Wood | Fine | +6 min | +2 / tick | 2 % |
| Elder Bark, Yggdrasil Wood, Blackwood, Frostwood | Best | +7 min | +3 / tick | 2 % |
Health, stamina, Eitr and regeneration are copied from the original dish. On top of that each dish carries one bonus:
| Bonus | Dishes |
|---|---|
| Block stamina cost − | 9 |
| Run stamina cost − | 8 |
| Attack stamina cost − | 8 |
| Jump stamina cost − | 8 |
| Eitr cost when casting − | 7 |
| Dodge stamina cost − | 6 |
| Stamina regeneration + | 3 |
Eat up to three different dishes with the same bonus and they add up (Poor 1 %, Fine and Best 2 % each, so 6 % at most). The bonus lasts as long as the food does; nothing is permanent. A smoked dish and its plain original never take two food slots at once.

Herb garden
Plant with the Cultivator on cultivated ground (Meadows, Black Forest, Plains). Mature crops are only harvested.
| Crop | Planted from | Gives | Grows in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunflower | Seeds | 1 Sunflower Head | 40 min |
| Sunflower | Head | 3 Seeds | 40 min |
| Mugwort | Seeds | 1 Mugwort Sprigs | 40 min |
| Mugwort | Sprigs | 3 Seeds | 40 min |
| Foxglove bush | 3 Flowers | Flowers, regrow every 250 min | 75 min |
| Lavender bush | 3 Flowers | Flowers, regrow every 250 min | 75 min |
Sunflower and mugwort work in two steps: grow the plant for its harvest, or replant the harvest to get three seeds back.

More garden pieces:
- Mosquito Trap — 1 Needle (for arrows) every 20 min, day and night, not in rain; traps need 3 m between them.
- Potted Flytrap — 1 Fly every 20 min, same rules.
- Rosemary Planter — 3 Rosemary Sprigs, regrow in 90 min.
- Oyster Mushroom Wall Planter — 3 Oyster Mushrooms, regrow in 45 min.
- Clay Salt Pan — 4 Stone + wood = 1 Kaolin.
- Screw Press — an extension of the Food Preparation Table, built with a Press Crank: Sunflower Head → Sunflower Oil, fish → Fish Bile (1–5 depending on the fish, 5 from serpent meat).

Improved potions
At the Food Preparation Table, a finished vanilla potion plus garden ingredients gives an Improved version with a golden icon. The effect itself is unchanged:
- +20 % duration (and cooldown) for most potions,
- −20 % cooldown for the healing potions (minor, medium, major), minor and medium stamina, minor Eitr and Berserkir.
21 potions are covered. A potion and its improved version share one cooldown, so they cannot be chained. Exact ingredients are in control_tableRnR.html.
Where the starter items come from
The setting ItemSource (section Items of the BepInEx config, taken from the server) decides it. The default, Auto, picks the right source by itself:
| ItemSource | Quests of ImmersiveTrader | Chests | Wild plants |
|---|---|---|---|
Auto (default) |
with ImmersiveTrader | without ImmersiveTrader | always |
Quests |
yes | no | always |
World |
no | yes | always |
Both |
yes | yes | always |
Wild plants grow rarely in areas explored for the first time:
| Plant | Biomes | Gives |
|---|---|---|
| Wild sunflower | Meadows, Plains | 1 Sunflower Seeds |
| Wild mugwort | Black Forest, Swamp | 1 Mugwort Seeds |
| Wild lavender bush | Meadows, Plains | Lavender Flowers, regrow |
| Wild foxglove bush | Black Forest | Foxglove Flowers, regrow |
Chests hold at most one Roots & Remedies item, always a single piece, and most chests hold none (30–45 % hold one, depending on the chest):
| Biome | Items |
|---|---|
| Meadows | Clay, Sunflower Seeds, Mugwort Seeds |
| Black Forest (ruins, burial chambers, troll caves) | Clay, Mugwort Seeds, Foxglove Flowers, Lavender Flowers, Oyster Mushroom Mycelium |
| Swamp (huts, sunken crypts) | Rosemary Root, Clay, Press Crank, flowers; in crypts also Live Flytrap and mycelium |
| Mountains (ruins, frost caves) | Rosemary Root, Clay, flowers; in caves also Live Flytrap and mycelium |
| Plains (fuling camps, stone structures) | Mosquito Net, Sunflower Seeds, Lavender Flowers, Clay |
The Press Crank is found only in the Swamp, the Live Flytrap only in dungeons, the Mosquito Net only in the Plains. Exact chances are in control_tableRnR.html.
Good to know
- Existing worlds: wild plants and chest items appear only in areas and chests that were never loaded before the mod was installed. In a fully explored world, visit new territory, use the quests of ImmersiveTrader, or spawn the starters from the console (
rnr spawn garden, rnr spawn seeds). - Only vanilla food can be smoked or dried. Feasts are not supported, and herbs are not dried.
- Mature crops and bushes cannot be moved or cut down, only harvested.
- The Screw Press works only as an extension of the Food Preparation Table.
- The beta status of every feature is listed in
AUDIT.md.
Multiplayer
Every player and the server need the same version of Roots & Remedies (and of ImmersiveTrader, when it is used). Garden settings (spacing, regrow times, flowers per pick) and ItemSource live in the BepInEx config and are taken from the server.
A dedicated server has not been through a full test yet: reports are welcome.
Requirements
Recommended, not required: ImmersiveTrader 1.1.0 or newer, for the trader quests that reward the garden starters.
Installation
r2modman
Install r2modman, select Valheim, find RootsAndRemedies, choose Download with dependencies, then launch with Start modded. Add ImmersiveTrader the same way if you want the quests.
Manual
- Install BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn.
- Copy
RootAndRemedies.dlltoValheim/BepInEx/plugins/. - Do not keep an older
RootsAndRemedies.Foods.dllnext to it. - If something fails, check
BepInEx/LogOutput.log.
The mod can be added to an existing world; see Good to know for where the starter items appear.
Console commands
Admin only (devcommands first; on a dedicated server your Steam ID goes into admin.txt, one ID per line, next to adminlist.txt or in BepInEx/config):
rnr list/rnr status— all foods and what registeredrnr spawn food [Fxx] [1–20] [tier 1–3]— spawn dishesrnr spawn raw [1–20]— the vanilla dishes the rack and smokehouse acceptrnr spawn garden|seeds|harvest|plants [1–50]— garden materials and cropsrnr plants, rnr garden [nearby]— crop status, garden items, traps near you
Full reference
Every dish, potion recipe, building cost and the chance of every chest item is listed in control_tableRnR.html, included with the mod. Changes between versions are in CHANGELOG.md.
