39 more creatures to tame, from deer, hares, necks and trolls to seekers and morgen, each with its own food and many with young of their own; tames that earn stars from what they kill, up to 30, so your wolf keeps up with the late game; wild creatures with more than two stars; tames that are knocked out instead of dying and get up again; and every tame follows you or stays on command — all of it set in one place, synced from the server, in English, German and Brazilian Portuguese.
Works with BetrValheim by DezzyCode: every setting of BetrTame in its own tab of BetrValheim's F11 window.

Tame more creatures
Feed a creature what it eats and keep it calm, as you would a wolf: it eats what lies on the ground near it, and while it is fed and nothing frightens it, the taming runs. Taming time grows with the biome — the game's own wolf takes 30 minutes.

Creatures marked with young have young of their own when two fed tame ones stand together: the creature itself, born tame.
Deer and hares are animals the game never lets eat or follow. BetrTame gives them just that: a hungry deer that feels safe walks to its food and eats, the taming runs while it is fed and calm, and once tame it follows or stays like any other tame. Everything else about them stays the game's.
Every list can be changed, and Other creatures takes more — creatures from other mods too —
as Prefab: Food, Food; Prefab: Food. A creature needs the game's monster or animal AI to be
tamed; bosses are left out.
Nothing new is created — no new creatures, no new items. Remove the mod and every creature is still one the game knows.
Tames earn stars
A tame earns experience from everything it kills: as much as the victim's health, so a troll counts for more than a greyling. Tames following you also get half of what you kill within 30 m, so a wolf at your side grows with you even when you strike the last blow.
Each star needs more than the one before, and one kill earns at most one star — no shortcut through a single giant. With each new star the tame is healed in full, and everyone nearby sees the message. Look at a tame and you see its stars and how far it is to the next.
Young are born with their parent's stars, up to two, as in the game. The rest a tame earns itself.
Stars above two
Up to two stars the game's own rules count. Above two, every star adds:
| Per star above two | |
|---|---|
| Health | Half the creature's base health (the game adds the full base health per star up to two) |
| Damage | 15 % of its base damage (the game adds 50 % per star up to two) |
| Size | 2 % bigger, up to 1.4 times its two-star size; it keeps its two-star look |
| Loot | The base loot once more. The game itself doubles loot with every star — a ten-star creature would drop hundreds of items |
These count for wild creatures and tames alike. Above two stars, the bar over a creature shows one star and the number of stars next to it.
Wild stars
A wild creature the game spawns with two stars rolls on: each further star at 15 %, up to the most its biome allows.
| Biome | Most stars |
|---|---|
| Meadows | 2 |
| Black Forest | 3 |
| Swamp | 4 |
| Mountain | 5 |
| Plains, Ocean | 6 |
| Mistlands | 7 |
| Ashlands, Deep North | 8 |
Bosses never roll, and neither does anything that is tamed, born, grown up or spawned by a command.
More monsters
The open world can spawn more creatures than the game does: 2 lets twice as many of a kind be around at once and brings new ones twice as often. One factor for everywhere, and one per biome that takes its place. Monsters and animals alike; raids, camps and dungeons stay the game's. 1, the game's own, to begin with.
Full mornings. The game counts the time a kind of creature waits for its next turn, but starts it over every second in which the time of day keeps that kind out - so creatures of the day only start waiting once the day has begun, and mornings stay empty. With Full mornings on (the default) their waiting goes on through the night, and they are there at dawn - never more at once than the game allows of that kind. The same for creatures of the night by day.
Knocked out, not dead
A tame that would die is knocked out instead: it lies still, takes no harm, nothing attacks it, and after 60 seconds it gets up with full health. The time runs on while nobody is near, so a tame you had to leave behind is standing again when you come back.
Only a player's blow kills it — the game lets players hit their tames only with the butcher knife, so whoever does means it. Summons die as always.
Better tames
Every tame obeys. Use any tame and it follows you, use it again and it stays — not only wolves.
Tames catch up. A tame that follows you and falls 50 m behind is brought to you, a few metres behind your back — never into a dungeon, and not while someone rides it.
Back with you after death. When you die, the tames that follow you — fighting on or knocked out at the place you fell — come back with you: they wait around the place you respawn, and a knocked-out one gets up there.
Tames fight their own kind. In the game, tame and wild creatures of one kind leave each other alone, so your wolves stand by while a wild pack bites you. With BetrTame they defend you — and leave a wild one alone while it is fed and being tamed.
Taming and fed time. One setting each, for every tame, the game's own included.
Food of the game's tames. What wolves, boars, lox, hens, asksvin and moose eat can be changed in F11 — the game's own food is set to begin with, and an empty field brings it back. Their taming time and young stay the game's.
With BetrValheim by DezzyCode, its feeding trough feeds the new tames too and tames them as it tames wolves, and tames told to follow come along through its portals — deer and hares too. (Deer and hares eat what lies on the ground; the trough is for the others.)
All adjustable
With BetrValheim installed, press F11: BetrTame
has its own tab at the bottom, every setting explained in a line. Without it, everything is in
BepInEx/config/dezzycode.valheim.betrtame.cfg.
| Section | What lives there |
|---|---|
| Taming | More creatures on/off, taming time, fed time, every tame commandable, young, fighting their own kind |
| Tame levels | On/off, most stars, experience, share with followers, heal on new star, stars passed to young |
| Stars above two | Health, damage, size, largest size and loot per star |
| Wild stars | On/off, chance per star, most stars per biome |
| Knocked out | On/off, recovery time, health when up |
| Tameable creatures | What each creature eats — empty makes it untameable — and other creatures |
| Display | Star count over creatures, experience on tames |
| Following | Catch up on/off and from how far; coming back with you after death |
| Game tames food | What wolves, boars, lox, hens, asksvin and moose eat |
| More monsters | How many creatures the open world spawns, everywhere and per biome; full mornings |
The server decides for everyone. Everything that changes how the game plays is set by the server admin and handed to every player on joining and whenever it changes. Only the display stays your own.
Worth knowing
Everyone needs it — the server and every player, in a matching version. The game refuses the connection otherwise and says why.
Run it on its own. Other mods that make creatures tameable, give creatures more than two stars or keep tames from dying would do the same work a second time. Switch those off.
Removing it. Creatures keep the stars they have; the game then treats them with its own rules. Creatures tamed through BetrTame stay tame, but without it they can no longer be commanded or fed.
