Odin's Almanac

Odin has been reading the sky for a very long time. He keeps notes. Now you get a copy.

Press K to open the almanac and see the weather in the biome you're standing in:

  • Now: what the sky is doing, and the wind
  • Next: what's coming, how many minutes until it arrives, and how long it will last
  • Then: the change after that, so you can plan a whole crossing
  • Wind: strength and direction for each, so you know whether the sail will help
  • A one-line remark from Odin, because he has opinions

The page stays up for 15 seconds, then fades away over another 5. Press K again to put it away sooner, or while it's fading to keep it a while longer.

No item to craft, no shrine to visit. Press the key, read the page, decide whether the boat goes out today.

How the forecast is worked out

Valheim doesn't roll the weather on the spot. Every so often it picks the next weather from your biome's list using a random number seeded from the world clock, so the same moment always gets the same weather. The almanac asks the game's own weather code what it will pick for the coming periods. No guesswork, no built-in table: the forecast follows the game's rules, including weathers added by other mods and any changes in future Valheim patches.

Wind is worked out the same way, from the same clock.

Configuration

Settings live in BepInEx/config/hevyh2o.valheim.odinsalmanac.cfg. If you have a Configuration Manager mod installed, you can also change them in game (usually F1); this mod doesn't need one.

Setting Default Controls
ShowKey K Key that opens the almanac. Press again to close it early, or while it's fading to bring it back.
ShowSeconds 15 How long the forecast stays fully visible. It keeps counting down while open.
FadeInSeconds 0.3 How quickly it fades in (and out, when you close it with the key).
FadeOutSeconds 5 How long it takes to fade away once ShowSeconds is up.
PositionX / PositionY 0.5 / 0.72 Where the forecast appears, as a fraction of the screen.
ForecastCount 2 How many upcoming changes to show, 1 to 3.
ShowWind true Wind strength and direction lines.
ShowFlavor true Odin's one-line remark about what's coming.

Things to know

  • It's a forecast for where you are. Each biome has its own weather. Sail from the Meadows into the Ocean and the forecast changes with you. Open the almanac again when you get there.
  • Some skies aren't weather. Raids, boss fights, dungeons and a few special places set their own sky. The almanac says so instead of guessing, and the normal forecast comes back when you leave.
  • Minutes are real minutes. Times are counted in real time, the way you'd plan a voyage, not in in-game hours.
  • Changes aren't instant. The game blends one weather into the next over a few seconds, so the rain may start a moment after the almanac says.
  • Your eyes only. The forecast is drawn on your screen. Works in single-player and multiplayer, and nobody else needs the mod.

Also from Odin's tavern

Odin's Free Refills

Odin's Free Refills: no stamina costs while the coast is clear. Handy for the long row home when the almanac says the wind has given up.

Odin's Wanted Posters

Odin's Wanted Posters: look at a creature and press E to see its health, weaknesses and drops. The almanac tells you what the sky is planning; the posters tell you what's waiting on the shore.

Odin's Saga

Odin's Saga: sleep or log out and Odin reads you the saga of your day; press J for a lifetime of deeds. The almanac warned you about the storm; the saga records that you sailed into it anyway.

Odin's Hearth

Odin's Hearth: press N at home to see your comfort level, what's counting, and the cheapest piece to build next. When the almanac says stay in, the hearth makes staying in worth it.

Odin's Pantry

Odin's Pantry: press P to see your foods, what you could cook right now, and Odin's best three- food pick for your biome. The almanac picks the day; the pantry packs the lunch.

Odin's Raven Returns

Odin's Raven Returns: after you die, a raven guards your grave; press H to see where it is, what killed you and what's still waiting there. For the voyages where you ignored the forecast.

Odin's Drunk Cam

Odin's Drunk Cam: drink a mead and the world sways; the more meads, the more it sways. Purely visual, with an intensity slider and an off key. When the almanac says stay in, this is what staying in looks like.

Odin's Weapon Memories

Odin's Weapon Memories: every weapon remembers what it has killed and earns a name from how it was used, like Storied Frost Greataxe of the Troll's Bane. Hunt on clear nights and your bow may earn the name Moonlit.
