Odin's Saga

Huginn and Muninn see everything you do. Everything. The Troll you finished on 4 HP, the Neck that got you first, the forty trees you felled for a wall you then tore down. They fly home every night and tell Odin, and Odin, being Odin, turns it into a saga.

Sleep in a bed and you wake up to the saga of your day:

The Saga of Too Many Greydwarves

  • Slew 37 Greydwarves. The survivors are holding a meeting about you.
  • Slew a Troll at 4 HP. The skalds will exaggerate this, as is tradition.
  • Died once, to a Neck. A Neck. Odin has questions.
  • Felled 41 trees. The forest has filed a complaint.
  • Set foot in the Black Forest for the first time. It did not roll out a welcome mat.

Sleep well. The ravens keep watch.

Log out and Odin holds the door long enough to read you that session's saga before you go. Press J any time for your lifetime Deeds page: everything you've slain, every way you've died, how far you've walked and sailed, and more.

Odin doesn't list everything. He picks the four to six most remarkable things you did, writes them up, and adds an opinion. He has a lot of opinions.

What the ravens count

  • Kills: every creature you helped kill, by kind, and every boss felled. Your 10th, 100th and 1000th of a kind get their own lines, and so does the first.
  • Deaths: how many, and what did it: a creature, falling, drowning, fire, frost, poison, a tree you were cutting down, your own roof. Odin is especially interested when it was something small.
  • Close calls: the least health you survived on, and anything you killed while nearly dead.
  • Travel: distance walked, sailed, swum and ridden.
  • Gathering: trees felled, rocks broken, what you hauled home most (ore gets special sympathy), crops harvested, fish caught.
  • Building: pieces built and torn down, items crafted, food burnt.
  • Food, skills and exploring: meals eaten, skill levels gained, biomes discovered for the first time, portals used, treasure found.
  • Oddities: jumps, doors left open, animals petted and tamed, bees robbed.

Each day gets its own title, from The Saga of the Muddy Boots to The Saga We Will Not Speak Of, and every deed has a pool of remarks so no two sagas read the same.

Past sagas, and bragging

Odin keeps your last 20 sagas. Press Shift+J to read the latest one again; keep pressing to go further back.

To share with friends, type in chat:

Command Does
/saga Reads your latest saga aloud in chat, one line at a time.
/saga 3 The same for an older one (1 is the latest).
/sagas Lists your past sagas with their numbers. Only you see this.
/deeds Brags about your lifetime deeds in chat.

Lines are shouted by default, so everyone in the world hears them. Set ShareTo to Say to keep it to the players around you.

How it keeps score

Valheim already keeps a ledger of your deeds for its achievements and stats screen. Odin's Saga listens to that ledger and to the game's own kill, death, damage, skill and biome events, rather than a built-in list of creatures or items. Creatures, items and building pieces added by other mods are counted and named the same way as vanilla ones.

Kills are counted the way the game counts them: every player who landed a hit gets the credit. Only your own deeds are tracked.

Your deeds are saved with your character, so they follow it from world to world and survive restarts. Each character has its own saga.

Configuration

Settings live in BepInEx/config/hevyh2o.valheim.odinssaga.cfg. If you have a Configuration Manager mod installed, you can also change them in game (usually F1); this mod doesn't need one.

Things to know

  • A day ends when you sleep or log out. The saga covers everything since the last one. If you skip sleeping for three days, Odin reads three days at once and picks the best bits.
  • Turning a category off hides it, it doesn't stop counting. Turn it back on and the full tally is there.
  • Counting starts when you install the mod. Odin wasn't watching before that. He's sorry. He was busy.
  • Logging out takes a moment longer. In single-player the game stays paused while Odin reads; in multiplayer the world carries on, so log out somewhere safe, as usual. Press any key to skip, or set ShowOnLogout to false.
  • Your eyes only, unless you share. The pages are drawn on your screen. Works in single-player and multiplayer, and nobody else needs the mod to read what you share in chat.

Also from Odin's tavern

Odin's Free Refills

Odin's Free Refills: no stamina costs while the coast is clear. Odin still counts every tree you fell; he just doesn't charge you for the swings.

Odin's Wanted Posters

Odin's Wanted Posters: look at a creature and press E to see its health, weaknesses and drops. The posters tell you what you're up against; the saga tells everyone how it went.

Odin's Almanac

Odin's Almanac: press K for a forecast of the next weather changes in your biome. Plan the voyage with the almanac; boast about it with the saga.

Odin's Hearth

Odin's Hearth: press N at home to see your comfort level, what's counting, and the cheapest piece to build next. A comfortable Viking lives long enough to have a saga worth reading.

Odin's Pantry

Odin's Pantry: press P to see your foods, what you could cook right now, and Odin's best three- food pick for your biome. Eat well. Odin is counting the burnt sausages.

Odin's Raven Returns

Odin's Raven Returns: after you die, a raven guards your grave; press H to see where it is, what killed you and what's still waiting there. Die gloriously; the raven will mind your things until you're back.

Odin's Drunk Cam

Odin's Drunk Cam: drink a mead and the world sways; the more meads, the more it sways. Purely visual, with an intensity slider and an off key. Toast the day's deeds before Odin reads them back to you.

Odin's Weapon Memories

Odin's Weapon Memories: every weapon remembers what it has killed and earns a name from how it was used, like Storied Frost Greataxe of the Troll's Bane. The saga remembers what you did; your weapon remembers what it did.
