Odins Thread
You came this way. Probably. Odin draws a faint trail on your map and minimap of every step you took, fading with age, with your deaths and portal hops marked. No pins, no drawing. Client-side. From the makers of Odin's Dusk Horn.Odin's Thread
You came this way. Probably. Odin knows for certain.
- Every step, drawn on the map. A faint line on your map and minimap shows where you actually walked, rode and sailed. No pins, no drawing, nothing to remember.
- Old roads fade. Today's trail is bold, last week's is a whisper, and anything
older than
MaxDaysquietly goes. - The big moments are marked. A small cross where you died, a ring where you stepped through a portal, so the trail makes sense afterwards.
No keys needed, no items, nothing to build. Wander off. Odin holds the other end of the thread.
What it draws
- The trail. A point every few metres while you move, with straight stretches thinned out so it stays light. Boats count, carts count, and so do panicked sprints from trolls.
- Fading by age. Each in-game day is a little fainter than the one after it. Ages follow the world's own clock, so a day is a day in Valheim, not at your desk.
- Deaths and portals. A red cross where you died, a pale blue ring at both ends of a portal trip. The thread never draws a line across the jump, so a trail that leaps across the map has an explanation.
- Each character and each world keeps its own thread.
The thread breaks rather than lies: no line is drawn across a portal, a console teleport, a death and respawn, or the gap between one session and the next.
Client-side only
Only you need it. It records your own position and keeps the trail in a small file
in your BepInEx config folder (BepInEx/config/OdinsThread), not in the world or your
character save: no new items, no network messages, no world data. Works in single-player,
on dedicated servers and with friends who don't have it.
Configuration
Settings live in BepInEx/config/hevyh2o.valheim.odinsthread.cfg. If you have a
Configuration Manager mod installed, you can also change them in game (usually F1);
this mod doesn't need one.
| Setting | Default | Controls |

DebugLog |
false | Write loads, saves, breaks, deaths and portal trips to the BepInEx log. |
Things to know
- Only your own steps. Friends' trails aren't drawn; they'd need the mod and a way to share, and Odin isn't sending anything.
- Counting starts when you install the mod. Odin wasn't holding the thread before that. He's sorry. He was busy.
- Clear it any time. The big map gets a small "Cut the thread" button in its top-left corner. Click it twice and the current world's trail for this character is gone. Resetting the map's fog doesn't touch the thread, and cutting the thread doesn't touch the fog.
- Not underground. Dungeons sit far above the world in Valheim's own bookkeeping, so the thread pauses at the door and picks up again when you come out.
- Not a route planner. If you want to draw routes by hand and share them, SOPMEHUA's MapRoutes does that well, and AntTrails wears real paths into the ground. Odin's Thread just remembers where you went, without being asked.
- Your eyes only. The thread is on your map and nobody else's. Works in single-player and multiplayer, and nobody else needs the mod.
- Found a bug or have an idea? Tell Odin in
Odin's Tavern. The
ravens read every note; your
BepInEx\LogOutput.loghelps them read faster.
Also from Odin's tavern
Odin's Latch: Odin shuts the doors you opened when it matters: an enemy close, nightfall or a raid at your base. The thread shows the way home; the latch stops anything following it in.
Odin's Second Hand: bow out and an enemy close, Odin swaps in your best melee weapon for it, and hands the bow back once it's gone. For the stretches of trail where something followed you.
Odin's Free Refills: no stamina costs while the coast is clear, normal costs once a threat is near. Longer legs, longer thread.
Odin's Wanted Posters: look at a creature and press E for its health, weaknesses and drops. Read the poster before your trail ends in a little cross.
Odin's Almanac: press K for a forecast of the next weather changes in your biome. Know the storm before you sail into it; the thread will show how far you got.
Odin's Saga: sleep or log out and Odin reads you the saga of your day; press J for a lifetime of deeds. The saga says what you did. The thread says where, and how many times you went round in circles.
Odin's Hearth: press N at home for your comfort level and the cheapest piece to build next. Every thread worth following ends at a fire.
Odin's Pantry: press P for your foods, what you could cook right now, and Odin's pick for your biome. Eat before the long walk, not halfway along it.
Odin's Raven Returns: after you die, a raven guards your grave; press H to see where it is and what killed you. The thread marks the spot. The raven guards it.
Odin's Drunk Cam: drink a mead and the world sways; the more meads, the more it sways. Your thread will show it. Odin won't tell anyone.
Odin's Weapon Memories: every weapon remembers what it has done and earns a name from it. The axe remembers the fights; the thread remembers the road to them.
Odin's Stone Whispers: Odin whispers when a Rock or Mysterious Rock is near; press 9 and he turns your gaze to it. Follow the whisper. The thread finds the way back.
Odin's Dusk Horn: a low horn before nightfall, and press Home for the time to dark and the way to your bed. When the horn sounds, the thread is the way you came.
Odin's Knot: log out and Odin asks what you were doing; log back in and he reads it back. Press ' to retie it. The knot says what you meant to do. The thread says where you wandered instead.
